I begin today’s meditation with a short excerpt from a poem by W.H. Auden:
For the error bred in the bone Of each woman and each man Craves what it cannot have, Not universal love But to be loved alone.
Is this a true analysis of our human condition, that we crave to be “loved alone”? You may quote the familiar statement from John’s Gospel, “For God so loved the world,” not me as a unique individual, craving and needing to be loved by God in any special way.
But before you conclude that it is selfish and arrogant to ask to be “loved alone,” I’d like you to consider a more profound understanding of
